In short

We don't set any cookies of our own. The site is funded by Google AdSense, and Google and its partners use cookies to show and measure adverts. In the UK they only do that for personalised ads after you've agreed, and you can change your choice from the Privacy settings link at the bottom of every page.

What cookies are

Cookies are small text files a website can save in your browser. They're used to remember choices, keep things working, and sometimes to show adverts based on what you've looked at before. Similar technologies, such as local storage and device identifiers, work in much the same way, and this policy covers those too.

Our own cookies

We don't set any. The BMI calculator keeps your numbers in the page only while you're using it, and they disappear when you refresh or close the tab.

Advertising cookies

This site shows adverts from Google AdSense. Google and the advertising partners it works with may set cookies to:

  • show you adverts based on your visits to this and other websites (personalised ads)
  • limit how often you see the same advert
  • measure whether adverts are working and detect fraud

Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this website or other websites. You can find out more in Google's advertising policies.

When you first visit from the UK, Google's consent message asks if you're happy for cookies to be used for advertising. It's a certified consent management platform, which is what Google requires for sites showing ads to UK visitors.

  • If you accept, you may see personalised ads.
  • If you decline, you'll still see adverts, but they won't be based on your browsing.

Changing your choice

Use the Privacy settings link at the bottom of any page to reopen the consent message and change your choice. You can also:

  • turn off personalised ads from Google in Google Ads Settings
  • block or delete cookies in your browser settings. The calculator and guides will carry on working if you do.

Other third-party requests

The site loads its fonts from Google Fonts. That request shares your IP address and basic browser details with Google, as explained in our privacy policy. If you follow a link to another website, such as the NHS, that site may use its own cookies.
