In short

BMICalculatorsFemale.co.uk is a free BMI calculator and set of plain-English guides for women in the UK. It works in stone and pounds or kilograms, follows NHS and NICE guidance, and is paid for by adverts rather than by you.

Why this site exists

Most BMI calculators are built for a general, often American, audience. They ask for your weight in pounds, quote US guidance, and leave you with a number and not much else.

This site is for women in the UK. The calculator starts in stone and feet because that's how most of us still think about our weight, and it switches to kilograms and centimetres in one tap. The guides then pick up the questions that usually follow: what a healthy weight looks like at your height, how things change around the menopause or with PCOS, and when BMI isn't the right measure at all.

What you'll find here

  • A BMI calculator that runs entirely in your browser, so your measurements never leave your device
  • A colour-coded BMI chart and a stone and pounds chart for every height from 4ft 10in to 6ft
  • Guides on healthy weight, age, menopause, PCOS, pregnancy, being underweight and the limits of BMI
  • A unit converter for switching between stone, pounds, kilograms, feet and centimetres

How we write our guides

Health information needs to be right, so every guide follows the same rules:

  • UK sources first. We base our guides on published guidance from the NHS, NICE and the UK Chief Medical Officers, and use the World Health Organization and peer-reviewed research where UK guidance doesn't cover something.
  • Sources on every page. Each guide lists what it's based on, with links, so you can check for yourself.
  • Numbers we can show our working for. Every chart and table is calculated from the standard BMI formula, not copied from elsewhere.
  • Kept up to date. We review guides when guidance changes, and the date each page was last updated is shown at the top.
  • Plain English. No jargon without an explanation, and no scare tactics.

If you spot something that's wrong or out of date, please tell us.

What we're not

We're not a medical service, and nothing here replaces advice from your GP, practice nurse, midwife or another health professional who knows you. Please read our medical disclaimer.

How the site is funded

The calculator and guides are free because the site shows adverts, served by Google AdSense. Advertisers have no say in what we write, and we don't choose the individual adverts you see. You can control how advertising cookies are used from the Privacy settings link at the bottom of every page, and our privacy policy explains the details.
